I was recently warned about the danger of picking up viruses, etc when using Skype. I do not chat, text or do anything but use the telephone feature. Should I worry? I run AVG and Spybot S&D.

I don't know of the likelihood of this, provided that your Skype application is kept up to date, I don't think this is particularly likely at all.
There is a reported vulnerability in the application referenced here and the recommendation is to update to version 4.2.0.169. if applicable.
