Things to know before you post

Below is a list of guidelines we've compiled for the Help with Spyware removal forum, its purpose is to help you receive the most timely help, and for you to leave here with a safe, secure, functioning computer.


  • This forum does not support the use of Pirated or otherwise illegal software. If such software is found on your computer we reserve the right to refuse our help.

  • We insist that anyone receiving help in this forum agrees to fit a Firewall and Anti-Virus Programme as a minimum level of Protection. If you don't have these programmes fitted already, your helper will recommend free programmes for you to install. If you are unwilling to install them (unless for technical reasons) we reserve the right not to help you further.

  • We use DDS as our preliminary analysis tool.

    To run a scan with DDS .....

    Download DDS and save it to your Desktop.


    • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    • If using Vista or Windows 7 you will be prompted by UAC, please allow the prompt.
    • DDS will now scan your computer.
    • When the scan is complete, DDS will open two (2) logs:

      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt

    • If not saved these logs will be automatically deleted when closed, so save both to your Desktop.
    • Please note it is important that you post BOTH logs in your topic.


    Please note: DDS will ask you to attach the second log (Attach.txt), please ignore this notice and post the log instead.

    Any problems downloading or running DDS.scr, try THIS alternate (DDS.com) version of DDS, or THIS alternate (DDS.pif) version.


  • If your computer has Windows 8.1 installed

    At the moment DDS is not compatible with Windows 8.1, so if your computer has that Operating System installed then you'll need to post us a set of FRST logs instead.

    To run a scan with FRST .....


    • Download FRST64 to your Desktop.
    • Double click Frst64.exe to launch it.
    • FRST will start to run.

      • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
      • Press the Scan button.
      • When finished scanning 2 logs will open on your Desktop;
        • FRST.txt
        • Addition.txt

      • Please post both logs in your forum topic.



  • If you are posting for the first time, please start a new thread by using the New topic button. DO NOT POST TO SOMEONE ELSE'S THREAD.

  • If you are posting a log from a Company owned computer.

    • You must inform your IT Department or Supervisor immediately.

      • Most company machines are connected into a network at some time or other, and your infection may compromise the security of that network.
      • If sensitive material is compromised by an infection, your company could be held liable.

    • Your Company must give permission for us to give you assistance.

      • We are not here to replace your company's IT Department.
      • There may be sensitive material on your computer that your company would not want revealed in an open forum.



  • If you are a Professional Computer Technician seeking help.

    • Please state up front that you are a Professional who is asking for a second opinion.


  • When posting your DDS logs, try to give brief details of your problems. The helpers are not clairvoyant, and will be better able to help you if they know what problems you're having.

  • Please do not ask for help or post logs in private messages. We have a team of experts to help you and you will get more attention and help by posting here in the forum.

  • Do not edit or alter your DDS logs in any way. You will only be asked to re-submit a complete log by your helper if you do.

  • Once you have posted your DDS logs, do not post again to that thread until you get a reply from a helper. Doing so removes your post from the zero reply list, and will result in you not getting answered quickly.

    One exception to this. If you have posted at another Site and are recieving help there, let us know, so that we can close your thread here.

  • If your post hasn't been replied to within 3 days, post us a reminder in the 72 Hours Forum including a link to your original post. Just a link please, we don't want HJT logs in that forum.

  • Failure to reply to a post from your helper within 3 days will result in your thread being closed. If you know you're going to be unable to reply within that time period, let your helper know, and they will make special provision.

    Reasons for the Forum Guidelines

    We thought you might like to know some of the thinking behind the Forum Guidelines, so that you might better appreciate why we have them.


    • This forum does not support the use of Pirated or otherwise illegal software.

      Updating your software is essential for good internet security. Without a valid license for your software you will not be able to update your software to patch it against the latest exploits. Therefore you will be unable to secure your computer and are certain to get re-infected in a very short time.

      Use of Pirated software is illegal, and were we to help a person who we know to be using such software, we would in the eyes of the law be aiding and abetting the crime.

      There may be circumstances where a user is unaware that their Operating System (Windows) is illegal, that is unfortunate, however it does not change the position of this forum.

    • We insist that anyone receiving help in this forum agrees to fit a Firewall and Anti-Virus Programme as a minimum level of Protection.

      Although we enjoy meeting and talking to you folks, we don't really want to see you in the forums more than once. With all the threats present on the Internet these days it is not safe to browse without a minimum level of protection on your computer. To do so would result in it being infected in a very short period of time. We don't want to keep cleaning people's computers of infection just because they won't fit adequate protection. We have enough work to do helping those users who want to learn to protect themselves, we don't see a point in continuing to help those who refuse to do so.

    • We use DDS.


      • Because it's fast, does not conflict with other scanners, and its reports are clear and can be depended upon.
      • It is compatible with both 64 and 32 bit Windows versions.
      • It is able to perform scans for rootkits and bootkits.


    • If you are posting for the first time please start a new thread by using the New topic button.

      Do not post to other people's threads, it makes analysing that thread more difficult for the helper (we have a big enough work load as it is). You will not be helped any quicker if you do so, you will only be told to post a log in the appropriate place.

    • If you are posting a log from a Company owned computer.

      The Help with spyware removal forum was set up to help private owners of computers, it was not intended that we assist with company owned machines. There may be restrictions and modifications to such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues with such machines that we are not equipped or trained to deal with.

    • If you are a Professional Computer Technician seeking help.

      We realise there may be occasions when you would like a second opinion on a job you may be working on, in which case let us know up front that you are a professional. By being open we can supply you with more appropriate information.

    • When posting your DDS logs, try to give brief details of your problems.

      It is important for you to give us details of the problems you're having. Some infections do not show on DDS logs, but their symptoms are known and your description may enable us to make an early diagnosis. They need only be brief, we don't need to know every last detail. If you have any messages that have popped up on your screen then the exact wording of these can be important.

    • Please do not ask for help or post logs in Private Messages.

      The Private Message system is not set up for answering logs, the forums are. By posting to the HJT forum all the helpers can see your log and you will be helped quicker. All helpers will refer you to the HJT forum if you send them a Private Message, so you are wasting both your time and ours by doing so.

    • Do not edit or alter your DDS logs in any way.

      All parts of your DDS logs give information to your helper, by omitting any lines of a report you take this information away from him/her. If you post an incomplete log you will only be asked to post another complete one by your helper, thus slowing down the help that he/she can give you.

    • Once you have posted your DDS logs, do not post again to that thread until you get a reply from a helper.

      The helpers at Spyware Warrior usually look at a Unanswered Post forum to see which DDS logs are yet to be answered. By posting to your post before you've been helped you remove your post from the list. It is therefore quite likely your post will get overlooked and you may not receive an answer at all.

      One exception to this rule. If you have posted at other sites, and are recieving help, we would appreciate it if you let us know. Helpers are in short supply and it is a waste of their time to be answering your post if you're already recieving help elsewhere. By letting us know, we can close your thread and your helper can go on to help someone else.

    • If your post hasn't been replied to within 3 days, post in the 72 Hours Forum

      There are always many more people with problems than there are helpers to help them, so sometimes when times are busy (which is almost always) posts get overlooked. We're sorry that it happens, but we're only human and we sometimes get overwhelmed.

      If you haven't received an answer to your post within 3 days, post in the 72 Hour Forum and someone should get back to you. Don't post a HijackThis log in the 72 hour forum, someone will only have to move it to your original thread. If your helper wants a new log they'll ask you for one.

    • Failure to reply to a post from your helper within 3 days will result in your thread being closed.

      You are being helped by an unpaid volunteer, who out of the goodness of their heart is trying to rid your computer of infection. We think it only fair that you treat them with due consideration and reply within an acceptable time frame. If you know that you're not going to be able to reply within 3 days show some manners and let them know, then they can make appropriate allowances. Otherwise the thread will be closed.

      Once a thread is closed it may only be re-opened with the agreement of the helper concerned. If they are not available, or are unwilling to re-open the thread then we will attempt to find another helper willing to help you, but this will of course cause delay to you being helped.
