Interesting strategy. This kind of social engineering is likely to have some success if done properly. The only issue is how to solve the inconsistency problem:
- unusual email address
- unusual origin of email (headers give away)
- different spelling
- different phrases and terms
- different habits and interests
- lack of familiarity to recent conversations
These should provide more than enough clues about something not quite right. Or what also may help is to ask about a detail from one's life that is not known to the public but only amongst one's closest friends or relatives. I myself used that method after I had been approached via email by a relative living in the Seattle area I haven't heard from in years. It later turned out the email and the person behind it were genuine, so I figure this may be a useful strategy for others in similar situations, too
