WinDefender is just the latest in a series of malware attacks designed to look like legitimate Windows components. But people have finally started to wise up to those smallish "alert" pop-ups, so malware creators are upping the ante with full-blown knockoffs of real security apps.

Not all of them (though a few individuals and a couple of "companies" are at least getting the fish eye from the FTC), but you can bet the groups behind it are raking in some cash.
I ran across Spyware Guard 2008 today; it also pops up a very realistic looking Windows Security Center message which even complains specifically about Spyware Guard 2008 not being registered and thus leaving the pc at risk!
