From Spybot Search & Destroy's site:

Big fake warning

Quote:
For the past two weeks, I got massive complaints from people who saw recommendations for Spybot-S&D on some TV show or heard about it on TV, and tried to go for it through the TV/radios website. Somehow, a bad link to Spybot-S&D is on its way and leading people to think that SpyHunter or SpyKiller would be the recommended Spybot-S&D. People downloading these two are forced to pay to remove spyware, and in the case of SpyKiller are even directed to us for support!

So my warning: please double-check what you've got before you pay anything!

Also, if you were mislead to SpyHunter or SpyKiller through Google AdWords, please contact Google. Google promised me some weeks ago they wouldn't do any more advertisement on my trademarked name "spybot", but I again receive complaints that they do, and this truggle with Google is going on for 4 months now

I did a blog post about this and I'm not going to repeat it all here but the bottom line is that google is continuing to use ads with the trademarked name "spybot' in them. Patrick Kolla requests that anyone finding these google ads with his trademarked name "spybot" in them, send a complaint to google.

I sent a complaint, as noted on the blog, and would encourage everyone else to do the same. Let's support Patrick Kolla in return for his wonderful creation, Spybot Search & Destroy!

hello suzi and every one else!
i have found google to not direct a lot of search lately for things and exspecialy for free ware to paid for product pages instead. i now recomend to people to use the"dog pile" search engine instead of google as it so far gives an honest search.
googlelers you have been warned!!!!!!!
this is my opinion and not thw web sights! Evil or Very Mad

hi....i sent my complaint to google last week and seemed to have got the same standard reply that everyone else is getting.
thanks we will check it out more or less

this address below for spyhunter
www.spybot-download.com ... (it even says Welcome to Spybot Download on it.)
is an absolute disgrace as it not only uses the word spybot but the word download.com as well .......ive lost count of the times ive posted help to people and said use spybot you can get it from download.com.

trekblue have even had the nerve to open another (albeit deserted) help forum http://forums.trekblue.com/
wonder how long this will be open before it disappears. Shocked

hi..
download.com do have the genuine spybot if you type it in their search ,if you type in spyware you get pages and pages of all kinds of spyware removers .there are two sponsored ads on the spybot download page from enigma though

i wasnt aware of these links on the right hand side that could quite easily fool the new pc user when they google for spybot
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=spybot&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&meta=

there seems to be links all over the web pretending to be spybot Crying or Very sad

Did a Google search for "spybot". Didn't have any trouble finding the real thing.

There were some useless results, but I didn't notice any ads. Probably there would have been some misleading links if I had dug deeper.

Especially in light of Google's recent IPO.

This is sort of off topic but we should also complain about things like this:

http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v21/ghostofterro/google2.jpg
http://img7.photobucket.com/albums/v21/ghostofterro/google1.jpg

The ads say that legitimate programs are spyware.

Image links changed to links. Don't post full size images that are 1024x768 in the topic. Not everyone is on broadband and many visitors use screen sizes smaller than that, Nick

I did a few searches on dogpile.com and the result was not encouraging. Anything with spyware in the search is filled with links to crapware with a few legit entries. It does say sponsored link, but they are mixed in with all of the legit results. Rolling Eyes

this saying to use dogpile was done at a time google was sending people looking for spybot to bogus spyware programs instead. and now dogpile is sending them there.
well things change on the net wait .5 seconds . it will change only seems to get worse.

Yes forum members,

This is a development lately, that we all (will come to) regret. The Web of Old is slowly being turned into one gigantic advert with a bit of useful information in between. If you go to the Ben Edelman site an reads his founded critique, you soon know what I am talking about. First there is the marketeer (and Google also has fallen into their hands as it seems), then the spyware makers follow, next are the malware creators, and the malcreants finish the job with their spam product. The protection of the end-user, especially in the privacy field is minimal, while the big commercial interest is not hampered one bit apparently,

greets,

The Flying Dutchman

Only just seen this, and I know it's well over a year since the last post, but I have *never* been impressed with Google's Sponsored Links.

They always take you to irrelevant sites that frequently give the exact opposite of what I'm looking for.

I now Googled "Spybot" and this sponsored link was given (amongst others):

www-SpyBoot.com
This had the following text on it, tucked into the left-hand corner:
Quote:
Spybot S&D 1.3, a freeware spyware removal tool, provides poor protection against spyware. While it detected only 54% of our test spyware, it removed only 23% of it.
Spybot has a good user interface and ran faster than nearly every other product we tested, but then crashed our Windows XP computer, rendering it virtually unusable.
The price is right [free], but you may want to backup your system before installing the latest version."[Spybot S&D 1.4] had the lowest spyware-cleanup score."

The page was actually http://www-spyboot.com/spyware-remover/spybot-versus-spyware-doctor.html - notice "spyboot.com".

Hmmm ... tempting to have a look around that site then see what they do with questions asked by way of this form here.

But as a rule I never follow Google's sponsored links - they are hardly ever relevant (unless they happen to be the same as the top link in the ordinary search results, as is the case if you search for Virgin Atlantic for example.
