Welcome to Spyware Warrior forums.

Please read all instructions, and DL any tools required, before beginning fix.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

Step 1:
Enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Open My Computer.
Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
Click OK.

Step 2:
DL StartDreck. Then create a new folder called:StartDreck.

Step 3
Once it is downloaded, extract the file into c:\startdreck.

Step 4
Navigate to c:\startdreck and double-click on Startdreck.exe.

Step 5
When the program opens click on the Config button.

Step 6Then click on the unmark all button.

Step 7
Then put checkmarks in the following checkboxes:
Under Registry put a checkmark in the Run Keys checkbox.

Under System/Drivers put a check in the Running Proccess checkbox.

Step 8
Press the OK button.

Step 9
You will now see a lot of text appear on your screen. Scroll through this text until you see the RunServicesOnce section. Under that we are looking for an entry that contains a DLL in the \system directory followed by a StreamingDeviceSetup. An example of a entry like that is below:

**t=rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSC.DLL,StreamingDeviceSetup

If this file does not exist skip to step 14.

Step 10
Write down the file name from that entry. In the above example the filename is c:\windows\system\msc.dll<<<file

Step 11
Now download Win98Fix.zip. Then, create a folder called win98fix

Step 12
Navigate to the c:\win98fix folder and double-click on the RunFix.reg. If it prompts whether or not you want to merge the information, click the Yes button

When that is done reboot your computer.

Step 13
Now find the file found in step 9, which should now be visible, and delete it.

Step 14
DL CWShredder

This is the step we run Shredder. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double-click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program.
Next click on the FIX button, not the Scan Only button, and let it scan your computer. When it is done, let it remove all it finds, and exit the program.

Step 15
Please head over to either Trend Micro or Panda ActiveScan and do an online, free, full system scan. Be sure and have the 'Auto Clean' button checked.

Step 16
This is the step we run AdAware. Be sure to have the latest definitions loaded. Then run a full system scan.

Step 17
Reboot and post a new log please.

OK, lets see if this finishes up alright.

Reboot, into safe mode, one of these ways:
Method 1
Turn on your computer.
Hold down the <Ctrl> key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears.
Highlight or select Safe Mode (usually number 3) from the Startup menu.
Press the <Enter> key.

Method 2
Click the Start button, click Run, in the Open box type msconfig and click OK.
Click the Advanced button.
Click Enable Startup Menu.
A check mark will appear in the box.
Click OK.

Choose to restart your computer when prompted.
When the system restarts, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode, then press the <Enter> key.

Method 3
Insert a non-bootable floppy disk in the floppy drive, and restart your computer. When the message Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready appears, remove the floppy disk from the drive.
Press the <F8> key twice.
The Windows 98 Startup menu appears.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode, and press the <Enter> key.
Method 4
If Windows 98 fails to start, it will attempt to enter Safe Mode automatically on the following restart.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Open My Computer.
Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ILNA.DLL << This file
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll << This file

While still in 'Safe Mode', run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

OK, looking good, nice work. Reboot several times, do some surfing, let me know how it all goes.

We have 2 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

Now that you have regained control of your machine, lets keep it clean. Please follow the links below to ensure the highest possible level of protection against any further invasions. The links and the apps are some of the most highly regarded apps in the field of security/protection & detection. Run AdAware & Spybot at least once a week, depending on your surfing habits.
Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3
Ad-Aware SE

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

Spyware Blaster & Spyware Guard
Both of these apps prevent installation of nasties and are proactive.
With Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!

To prevent known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine inistall WinPatrol.

I haven't done those last few things yet, because....my computer won't load now!! (I'm on a different one now) It will start up in Safe Mode, but in a normal start up it freezes once it loads our desktop picture! (It doesn't even load the icons.) Any ideas?

Sorry, no clue as to what that could be, try running some scans in safe mode with your anti-spyware apps, see if anything pops up bad.

It came back! These are my problems: my homepage is hijacked to About:Blank, and everytime I change it or reboot it changes back, also, the name of the CWS that CWShredder says it removes (which comes back everytime anyways) is named CWS Searchx.

OK, lets attack this differently.

Exclamation

1. Click Start, click Run, type scanregw, and then click OK.
2. When you receive a prompt to back up the registry, click Yes.
3. When you receive the "Backup complete" message, click OK

Click 'Start', select 'Run', type in REGEDIT when dialog box appears, hit 'Enter'.

Once regedit pops up, navigate to, by unticking the + signs to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

On the right hand side of the pane, look for:
sp

Right-click it, select 'Delete', accept the changes, close your registry.

Lets run Startdreck again with these settings:
-Press: Config
-Press: Unmark All

Then, check the following boxes only:
-Registry -> Run Keys
-Registry -> Browser Helper Objects
-System/drivers -> Running processes
-Press: OK
-Press: Save
Exit the program

Look for StartDreck.log in the StartDreck folder, and copy/paste the StartDreck log and a new HijackThis log to your response. The information on these logs will determine which route we'll take to get rid of the malware.

OK, it would seem I had you run the startdreck app incorrectly, I gave you the wrong itmes to check, sorry about that. Please rerun the app as set up below:

Double-click the startdreck.exe program and when it loads, click on the Config button.

Press the Unmark All button.

Then select the following checkboxes:

Run Keys under the Registry Section

Running Processes under the System/Drivers section.

Press the OK button.

When it is done scanning your computer, press the Save button and then open that log and post its contents as a reply to this message.

OK, this is getting frustrating, the log shows no infected file!!

Lets run one of the tools out for this one:

Shut down all running programs, disconnect from the internet and run the tool.
Save the log it makes and post it in your next reply.

Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes below the 'Startup' button:
List also minor sections (full)
List empty sections (complete)

Make a new folder on your 'C' drive called Dllcompare

DllCompare by Option^Explicit

Download DllCompare.exe to that folder then run it
Click the >Run Locate.com< wait til it finish's
then click compare, wait for it to finish.

Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist" as where Files in the bottom section have some form of problem being accessed.
There will be only minimal, if any files listed there... once that Compare scan is complete, and you find you have a few files listed in the lower box.

After that if you are left with files that are still not found, click the 'Make a Log' of what was found button, and post that log.

Start SpSeHjfix_Beta6.exe click on " Desinfecton starten" (the other button means close) than it wil reboot and finish the cleaning

Well...it clears it up, then when it restarts my computer it comes back, grr.....so, I cleared off things I *know* are deletable from my HJT log, and then ran spybot S&D ("no threats"), and ran CWS Shredder (nothing found), all done in safe mode, then restarted in normal mode, fine so far, but it has been clear for a few seconds then comes back in about 5 mins before, so....ill post a log now, restart and post a new one again.....maybe you'll see something fishy....thanks.

I turned on my comp today to find I had About:blank again.....so I scanned using HJT, deleted all the spyware files, then ran scans, and deleted temp files/cookies (all in safe mode), then restarted, all is fine for now. But my comp still freezes on startup....it loads my desktop background, but no icons, and freezes there....it takes 1-4 or 5 restarts before it fully loads!!! any ideas about this prob? thanks.

Thats odd, is it somewhere in your folders, perhaps the HJT folder?

Look around some, see if you can find it.

If njot, DL a fresh copy and run it, see if that works, perhaps the old one got corrupted somehow.

Ah...I guess this is something new with the updated HJT you got me to install...but when I say to scan and save a log file it does, but little to my knowledge, until now, it had saved a permanent log file beside my HJT program icon, and everytime i asked it to save a log it would just update that permanently planted one! it never did that before...so anyways, got that solved. is that the way other peoples works too? P.S. my about:blank came back again today, but i went into safe mode, deleted all the bad files and restarted, and all was fine...but it omes back every few days anyways...and my comp still has that pesky restart issue! grr...any ideas about the restart prob?

OK, lets do a couple of things.

First off install both IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File

Lets also run the latest beta removal tool, version 9:

DL to your desktop, create a new folder for it, unzip all files to that new folder, start the tool, post its log along with the startup list from below.

Next, lets see if there is something loading up which is regenerating this sucker.

Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes below the 'Startup' button:
List also minor sections (full)
List empty sections (complete)

We'll go from there.

my internet explorer still won't load new windows.....like, when you click on a link and it opens a new one....all it does it load the bar at the top, but nothing else at all will load....its making it impossible for me to use IE for anything. and when i try to play games through mozilla, since IE doesnt work, it says i need to DL java, and ive tried about 5 times now and the DL never works......any ideas for either?

Well, the restarting has been fine for about 10 restarts so far, but I still have the new browser/window loading issue with IE....that's my last problem I think.
