When I click on most links, my IE locks up, and many processes are extremely slow. I'm about to wipe out my c:\ drive and reinstall everything. Is that nessecary?

Hi He-Man

Welcome to Spyware Warrior

1. From a Run box, launch SERVICES.MSC.
Right-click on the WinTools for IE service and take Properties.
Click the Stop button. Set Startup Type to Disabled.

2. Reboot, preferably into safe mode

3. Go to Start>Run and type in regedit
Navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services]
Expand the "Services" key in the left pane. Delete the WinTools (or similarly named) key.

4. Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

Now do a search for this and delete these folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools < --------Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat < -------- File

5. Reboot the computer normally
Run HJT again with all browsers closed and check these items and then on Fix:

Hi Lobos,
Thanks so much for the quick reply. The only problem I had was on step 4. I cannot search for anything on my computer since I got hit with these viruses. It locks up for approx. 20 seconds everytime I try to go to Search. I did everything else and restarted, but I still get the same results when I try to search... Here's my new log, however. Thanks again for the help. It is very much appreciated.

*EDIT: I wanted to add, that my computer(it's a laptop, by the way) does the thing where it seems to idle after about every 5 seconds of activity. Even, for example, if I just type a few words and save, it will freeze for a couple of seconds and I can hear the HD start running. I'm almost positive that it never did that before on such a regular basis as now. It needs to freeze and kick the HD in after every command... I hope I explained that correctly. Hope it doesn't cause a headache. Thanks again for all the time and help you provide.

How old is the laptop? sound like the hardrive maybe failing

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

That's the problem, req.dat just keeps coming back. If I try to delete it by actually going into windows/system32/req.dat, it says access denied. I've gone into Safe Mode to delete it, but it still says access denied. I read somewhere else that this is a new 'backdoor' program. I'd give anything to delete it... Know of anyway to override the access denied warning? Thanks for all the help Lobos. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I was going to post a new log, but I remember McAfee said it was infected and deleted it.

Ok try this

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily
Now run killbox and paste this lines into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and let it reboot

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

then when it reboots run HJT & make sure these entries have gone

Thanks again Lobos. Okay, I downloaded McAfee prior to your last post, and it seemed to delete the req.dat file. Here's my latest hijackthis log. However, I am still unable to search within the computer(it still locks up for almost a minute), and when I click on any link in IE, it locks up as well...

Well He-Man Your system appears to be clean from the looks of it lets start cleaning your temps.

Please follow these steps in order to clean your computer of Malware which can include Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Hijackers and Dialers.

Step 1:
Download Spybot and Adaware from the following locations and install them. You should run both programs and clean up what it finds. This is to gaurantee that you find the most malware you can installed on your computer.

Before running the scans on both programs, it is mandatory that you update the programs. There are update options in each program when you run them.

Spybot

Ad-aware

If you would like to learn more about how to use these two programs with the proper settings you can read the tutorials below:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer.

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer.

When you scan with both programs, fix everything that it finds.

When you are done with the scan and fixing the items. Please continue with the next step.

Step 2:

It is important that you run Spybot and Adaware before you proceed with this step. Fixing enties with Hijackthis may leave behind unwanted files on your computer if the previous step was not done first.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis Download Site

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here, and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

Also do this i was looking up this trojan it consists of three files i dont know if Mcafee got it all

Copy and paste these instructions to a notepad

So addition to what a posted before do this

delete these too

c:\windows\system32\req.exe
c:\1.exe

See if that improves the situation if you can't delete them in normal mode then try safe mode

Thanks Lobos. Everything seems to be running very smoothly now. Upon checking for '1.exe' in my c: drive, I noticed 2 files(hidden) that raised a little concern because of their size. The first is called 'hiberfil', which says its a system file and is 478 MB. It was created on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, 11:34:56 PM. The second is 'pagefile', also a system file, and is 720 MB. It was created on Sunday, October 17, 2004, 10:04:56 AM.

Just curious about those and hoping they aren't virus-related. You probably hear this quite often, but I really appreciate your help, Lobos. I can't stress how helpful you have been. Thank you so much, you are great at what you do.

For your question on pagefile.sys

The pagefile.sys file is how Windows NT handles virtual memory using demand paging. Demand paging is essentially a way that the operating system can substitute space on the hard disk for actual RAM. This is accomplished by the Memory Management Unit (MMU) on the CPU. Memory is broken up into small chunks called page frames. In this case, "memory" means the space that exists both in RAM and on the hard disk in pagefile.sys. As code and data load into RAM from the hard disk, RAM fills up. When Windows NT decides that RAM is so full that the operating system needs more RAM to get things done, the operating system takes a look at the page frames in RAM and decides which of these page frames have not been used recently. Once Windows NT has rounded up all the least recently used page frames in RAM, it writes these frames to the hard disk, in the file called pagefile.sys. After these page frames are swapped to disk, Windows NT has then freed up the RAM these frames were taking up. Windows NT then uses this free space to load code and data which previously could not be loaded for lack of RAM space.

the hiberfil.sys file is where your computer stores its hibernation information before it goes into hybernation.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
  1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
