Hi and welcome.

First thing I need you to do is unzip your hijackthis to its own folder.
It cannot create backups when run from within the zip file.

If you can't find your zipped one...here is the download for the exe:

http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe

Be sure to save it to its own folder such as C:\Hijack\hijackthis.exe.

Then....

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.

  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  6. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  7. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi Jane Smile

Looking much better. Smile

Most of us suggest uninstalling Viewpoint toolbar and viewpoint manager. They get installed without your knowledge when AIM is installed.
You can do that in add/remove programs if you don't use those programs.

You have any idea what this file is?:

C:\WINDOWS\tmigogg.EXE

My research brings up nothing which tells me its likely a randomed named baddie.

Can you upload it to this site please:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Let them scan it and if its labeled malware please copy and paste results here. I just need the scanners results part.

Click Start> run> type sc delete Windows Overlay Components and hit enter.
You should get success messege.

Few things to have hijack fix.

Start hijackthis, run system scan only and check:
If you decided to keep viewpoint apps. Ignore the viewpoint items listed to fix. (I marked them with **)

Close all other open windows and hit "fix checked".

Reboot computer and post a fresh hijack log please.
Let me know how things are running. Smile

Hi Jane;

sorry for delay. I had trouble connecting to this site.

Glad things are running better.

Go ahead and delete this file you scanned at Jotti if you didn't do that already:

C:\WINDOWS\tmigogg.EXE

I want to check another file. It does not seem to be related to AOL.
Not enough info on it to know for sure if good or bad.

AOLOpt.exe

I don't see it running so I don't know where it lives.
XP by default will not search hidden files so we have to enable that.

Click start> search> for files and folders> all files and folders.
Choose the C drive to search
In the search for box type AOLOpt.exe

Expand the "advanced search options"
Make sure the following are checked:

Search hidden
Search System
Search sub folders.

then hit "search"

If results..see where the file lives and upload it to Jotti:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Post results please.

We still have one thing to have Hijackthis fix.

I'm not sure if this app will find it or not but we will try.

Click start> run> type services.msc and hit enter.
Scroll down to:

Windows Overlay Componets <--must be this exact name!

Double click it to bring up properties
Click the Stop button if available
Use the Down arrow beside "startup type" and set it to disabled
Apply and OK changes, exit that window.

Start hijackthis> "go to misc tools section"
Click "Delete an NT Service"

Paste this into the box:

Windows Overlay Components

then hit OK.
If successful you will be told so and be told to reboot.

Please reboot.

Please post new Hijackthis log.
Do let me know if error with that hijack fix and exactly what it was.

thanks Smile

Hopefully I will be speedier in reply now that my internet works Smile

Blender, no need to apologise for the delay - you are awesome!

Could not find AOLOpt.exe. It did come up on the search under the hijack logs but nowhere else.

Can not believe the difference in this machine. Here is the latest log:

Hi Smile

Sorry for delay again...had to leave town on family matters.

Glad things are running better. Smile

Log looks almost cleaned up. I'm concerned about that one entry tho. Looks like possibly one of SDBOT/f-bot varients.
I think just leftovers but I want to check.

Lets have Hijackthis fix this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [AOL Messenger Optimized] AOLOpt.exe

Reboot computer...

Then download this tool: (f-bot cleaner)

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/FSecure-FBot-cleaner-tool-Download-20851.html

You should get prompt in a few secs to download it.
Cus you have sp2...you will need to click the yellow info bar and tell it to download file.
Comes as a zip.
Unzip it to its own folder.
Disconnect from internet and network if any.
Double click the exe and let it do its thing.
If any f-bot files are running they are killed, bad regiustry entries are removed and bad files found are deleted.
You should see it's progress.

I have not used this tool myself so I dont know if log is created or not. If log is made...it likely will be in same folder as tool.
If no log...please note if any findings.

Reboot again when done and post new HJT log please.
If no log was made by the cleaner...let me know if it found anything.

Also let me know please if your Norton works OK or if anything wierd with it.

Smile

OK - removed AOLOpt.exe with Hijackthis.

Ran f-bot cleaner. No log but Norton said it had cleaned 3 files identified as worms. Did not get names. Otherwise Norton seems ok.
