Hello and welcome to Spyware Warrior forums.
You have 2 major infections going on here, lets get those and we'll deal with the others afterwards.
WinTools Special fix: XP/NT
Wintools may have an entry in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If so, it may be easy to get rid of. If not, there are still ways to remove it from your system.
For either solution:
Reboot into Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode:
Click on the Start Button, Control Panel. Double-click on Administrative Tools then on Services.
Look for a service called Wintools for IE Service. double-click it to open, then click the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled.
(If the service is not there, no worries...all the better!)
Next, right-click on the Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
In the Processes tab, look for WToolsA.exe, WToolsS.exe and WSup.exe. If any or all of these exist, right-click on each one and select End Process Tree, and answer affirmatively to any confirmation questions.
At this point, you can check the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If there is an uninstaller for Wintools, try running it now. I would still recommend proceeding through the rest of this fix even if there is an uninstaller, however.
Now, please open a command prompt (Start button -> Run, type cmd and click "OK"). at the prompt, type
regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" then <ENTER>.
Then type exit to close the command prompt window.
Now, we can proceed to delete these directories, located at:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <-- Delete the BOLD directory.
C:\Program Files\Toolbar <-- Delete the BOLD directory.
Next:
OK, with this infection there is only one way to rid the files in a manner to prevent re-infection, as this will keep regenerating as you keep rebooting.
You need to do a search for files by date created, they should all be on the bottom of the list, all files will be 3 letters in name, and always the first letter a capital. Size of exe is 7.5kb in size.
Look in system32 and windows folders.
Be sure and check the properties of each file, as there are many legit MS files.
There will also be some html files located in the windows folder as well, they can also be deleted.
Size will be 2-3 kb.
DESKTOP HIJACK
Go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security" or similar. Select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK. That should get rid of it.
Once you have searched for all the files, and think they have been deleted, post a new HJT log and we will see whats left over if anything. _________________

ok.. thanks for the reply....here is where I am. I should note....that I did install SP2, and went thru the built in uninstall for that blue circle thing in the tray since my first post.
I did everything you said, with these exceptions:
WToolsA.exe, WToolsS.exe and WSup.exe weren't there
c:\Program Files\Toolbar directory wasn't there
I could not find any of the three letter files in the system32 or windows folders
on the DESKTOP HIJACK there was nothing checked on the "WEB" tab. The only thing there was a "my current home page" that was not checked.
I rebooted, ran HJT again...log below.
symtoms I can tell right now....all my desktop icons are missing....but the red background and the black box with "Danger: spyware: is gone.
Also, I can't right click anything.....nothing happens when I right click, which is usually how I delete files etc.....
Thanks again soooo much for your help with this...its so frustrateing.

OK, if you didn't find any, did you run any anti spy apps to remove things?
Currently, only Spybot Search & destroy is alleged to have the infection in its definitions, and that was with the last update, so, unless you had Spybot remove those files, then you need to go back in and search for them, because the infection will keep regenerating untill you kill all those files.
Let me know please. _________________

everything came back....as you said it would.....so I started from scratch with your instructions.
I did find several 3 letter files starting with caps in the Windows and System32 folders, however, they are 9.5kb in size and I think are all *.exe files. Are these the ones I should delete? I still cant right click anything to check properties and when I go to file - propeties on the menu bar....no properties opens up. Also, when you say search by "date created" ... do you mean by "date modified", cause that is the only way I can see to do it (sorry if thats dumb on my part)...and when you say the files should be at the bottom, does that mean you're looking for "most recent" or "oldest" files?
Thank you |

OK, its possible that the infection has changed, and very recently. I say this because the desktop was always fixable with the fix I provided, however, just in the last few days, the fix has not worked.
Try this some one said this might work its supposed to replace the dektop and fix what the hijacker did
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=139544
Download it and double click on it and aloow it to merge with the registry
Also do a search for this file and delete it if you find it
desktop.html
Once you have done that, you can check the properties and using date modified should also work for the searches. _________________

I have done as you said above.... I can now right click stuff, and the "danger: spyware" desktop is gone (i haven't rebooted yet tho to see if it comes back).....but, on those 3 letter files again.......I see about 20 of them....all exe files.....and they are 9.5kb in size.....not the 7.5kb size you said they should be. Also, when I check their properties, is there something in particular I should be looking out for to make sure it is a file I should NOT delete. I'm sorry if these are dumb questions, I just want to be careful not to delete a file I shouldn't.
Thank you again for your patience.....you're a lifesaver!!! |

Essentially, those files won't have much info at all. If they are all the same in size, date modified, created with no manufacturer info, more than likely, bad files.
Legit files will have all sorts of pertinent info. _________________

Yes, we still have a couple of things here to remove.
Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DD6ACF1C-25A7-0F50-8729-2FB0BE6235E4} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\krdaxwz.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DD6ACF6C-25A7-0D51-872F-2FB0BC63359F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\krdaxwz.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.windupdates.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.windupdates.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: 213.159.117.202
Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.
Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\krdaxwz.dll <<<--file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe <<<--file
To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.
Post a new HJT log please.
Upon rebooting, it may be the O15 entries will still be presnt, if so, please do the following:
Download DelDomainszip and unzip it to your desktop.
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'
Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. _________________

OK, one more, being a bit stubborn I guess.
Reboot into 'Safe Mode', go to 'Task Manager', and 'End Task' on the following process(es):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rrup.exe
Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rrup.exe <<<--file
While still in 'Safe Mode', run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Osus] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rrup.exe
Reboot into Normal mode and post a new HJT log please. _________________

OK, one minor item remaining, are things running ok now? Let me know please.
Reboot, into 'Safe mode', run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.
We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:
Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
Index.dat Suite
Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.
Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.
Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation
Does your resident av setup contain a firewall? If not, please get one right away. Zone Alarm is one of the most popular, its free and easy to use.
XP SP2 firewall is not good enough.
To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL these two apps, which are becoming the next one-two punch in the fight against ad/mal/spyware with AdAware & Spybot S&D:
Spyware Guard & Spyware Blaster
With Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, just DL, check for updates, enable protection, and your done!
To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.
And to prevent unknown applications from being installed on your machine inistall WinPatrol.
Tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.
Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps
And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
Calendar of Updates
Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.
Happy surfing!!

Took care of line R0, didn't come back on reboot. Deleted all the temp and cookie files. Working on the security apps you mentioned.
NO SIGN OF ANY INFECTION, THAT I CAN SEE !
Thank you so very much for all your help! |
