|
|
My friend just called ready to throw her computer away because somehow the content advisor got messed up and won't let her open any windows. She's running Win ME with IE 5 or 5.5, I'm not sure which. She *hates* messing with the computer, but once in a while will let me work on it.
She said when she puts in her name and password to change the settings, or diable it, it changes right back. The changes don't take. And it won't let her open any IE windows. She restored all of the default security settings in Internet Options.
She has no firewall, no AV currently, but she did let me install Adaware 6.0 and Spybot S&D and I sneaked in IESPYAD. I told her to try to update AAW and Spybot then run the scans. She is on dial-up and hates to download anything. (so no p2p or junk downloads). The only reason she has the 3 things is that I burned the installers to a CD and took them to her and installed them.
I have never used the content advisor and so I don't know what to tell her. she said she's had this problem off and on before but it eventually went away and she doen't know why it got messed up or why it went away.
TIA. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

Try this;
Click start, run, type in REGEDIT,click ok, this opens registry editor.Click + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,+ in front of SOFTWARE,+ in front of Microsoft,+ in front of Windows,+ in front of Current Version,+ in front of Policies, Click Ratings,look to right, Click line below Default,press delete,enter. Leave default line only in right pane.Close registry editor.Next click start,find files and folders,type "ratings.pol". When this file is found,delete it.This should remove the password that's been set,and leave content advisor fully operable.

I printed out the instructions from TheKid on the computing.net post and followed them to the letter and it worked!
Thanks again everyone. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security
