Here is some interesting info: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=20795
Key points, XP SP2 is around 80 MB if you have SP1 and are fully patched. If not, the full SP 2 is much larger, into the hundreds of Megabytes.
If you have a computer with application recovery CDs ( HP, Compaq, eMachine, and others) then you may want to wait or contact your computer vendor before applying this patch. If something goes wrong, you may not be able to recover your computer. See this about craputers: http://spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?t=4713 _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

MS info on programs that have known issues: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2
Includes Zone Alarm, Yahoo Messenger, NAV 2003, Norton GoBack, Real Player free (so sad about that one ), Beckey email client, Musicmatch jukebox, Outlook 2000, 2002, and 2003, some MS Ofiice items, McAffee virus scan 4.51, Kerio personnel firewall, Kazaa (so sad ), Bitdefender, Ad-Shield (not sarcasticly sad ), AOL 9, and a ton of games by blizzard and others.
There are about 10 times more items in the link.
Might really want to check things out before taking the plunge. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Heh , I have a HP which came with a backup recovery partition instead of a Recovery disk , intended to combat pirate copies of XP I guess , too bad the recovery partition has never ever worked ..
I'll be avoiding SP2 for a while yet , I'm happy to stick with a clean and working pc. _________________ | Stop Malvertising | Outpost | Blocklist Pro | Hosts | |

Here's the longest list in christendom,detailing the flaws that XP SP2 supposedly "fixes" (leaving aside the ones it causes);
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811113
If you built something that had that many problems, wouldn't you just start over?

You can turn it off,but be warned- SP2 could affect the functioning of your preffered firewall.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2
Unfortunately,SP2 killed my flipping expensive third party firewall.Am using Sygate, for the time being, but even that is cranky.
If you scroll through the list that URL links to,you will see details of all the software that can suffer undesirable consequences after installing SP2. |

How did it kill your firewall? I take it turning off XP's wasn't enough. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

I haven't got the new Service Pack yet, partly because of the warnings that have been published and partly because I'm on dialup....can't even begin to imagine how long it will take!
Am I at any more risk for not doing it just yet? Should I wait to see if some of these issues get resolved (maybe that's a dumb question!)?
I have probably everything I need to protect my pc from crap, but I know that new nasties come out faster than lemmings over a cliff...and I don't venture into the Net other than the forums I usually visit and sites I know are safe.

Since you are on dial up, the choice is kind of made for you, wait. Even if you are fully patched and have SP1 for XP, it is still about an 80 megabyte download. That's going to tie up the phone line for quite awhile. I would wait till you can get the cd to install it. It appears that you can order it now http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
I'm sure you are fully protected and patched with a firewall and other security tools, so you should be fine for the time it takes to wait for the cd. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Thanks, Nick.
I ordered the CD, now have to wait 4-6 weeks.....!
Plus, when I went to order, FF popped up a warning about the security certificate! Thought it was kinda funny. Imagine....MS NOT a trusted site?

Deb, from all that I have been reading, SP2 is trying to do what we already do here, and doing somewhat of a bad job, so I would stand firm right now and not take the d/l.
I'm advising all of my clients here to not take sp2, for now. _________________ Proud member of the Chest Zipper Club! |

I got that from Firefox as well. I checked with IE and didn't get it, so i wouldn't worry about it. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Oh, I'm not worried about it, no.
I just thought it was funny, is all.
It said it was "unable to verify the identity" of the site the link sent me to to give my information. I just had it to allow for that session
