Time to check and see if you Sun java is up to date. Current version is Version 1.5.0 build 1.5.0_01-b08. If you are still using Microsoft java, then you really need to update, since Microsoft doesn't support it anymore.
Visit this page and click the download link and you will get updated as needed http://www.java.com/en/download/help/auto_install.jsp _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

I'm running 1.4.2.06, and it says I'm up to date. It updated automatically before for me. Is the new version only for newer operating systems?

I went to the manual download page. It's still offering 1.4.2_06. Not finding anything newer. Am I just missing it?

Here's a page you can direct download JRE 5 http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
You want the 3rd one from the top. I find the Sun site to be confusing to look for things myself. As far as I know you running Win 98 shouldn't be a problem, I have the 1.5 running on my ME box with no problems. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Once you have Sun java installed, you don't have to do anything about Microsoft jave. You can open Internet options in the control panel and click advanced and deselect any checks by MS java then click apply and ok. You'll notice that there is one for Sun java and you want that one checked. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

| Thanks Nick. Interesting that the "get java" link on the main page leads to an outdated version. As critical as it is to keep stuff like this up to date, that doesn't make sense, but the "check for update" feature in the control panel applet didn't find it either. Makes me wonder how the average user is supposed to know when to update. |

Now I see the problem. I wonder just how much of an issue this would be? I've got 98 first edition.

Hi all...thought it was time to contribute. No long intro, I've learned a lot lurking here and am pleased to be a part of it now.
@Herbalist - I've installed it on a couple of Win98A boxes for customers:
Cleaned out all old Java and IE cache files
Got all M$'s updates including the VM and Script "updates" from the WU site.
Went to www.java.com for the install link.
Manually downloaded the .exe and ran it.
Stable, no conflicts. One of the systems has only 64 mb RAM - it still ran fine Only done it twice though. Not a big test sample. I'd back up first, then go for it. |

For attention of all
A very recently discovered exploit by our very own Calamity Jane
has riddled a lot of PC's recently>>>
Sun Java update exploit=Vundo/Winfixer/Virtumonde infection
http://www3.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14738046~start=0
In short>>>
If you have Sun java on your PC,check the add/remove software part of control panel to see which version(s) you have installed.
The only one required is the latest version 1.5.05
Download here>>>
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
All others should be uninstalled immediatley since they are at risk from this recently discovered exploit. _________________ Malware hunter....Got Bot ?
