I've been a huge Beatles fan ever since the first time I heard Paul McCartney sing "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah..." Then there was the White album, St. Pepper's, etc. All great stuff, IMO.
I like the Stones music, but I'm not a huge to-die-for Stones fan. Did anyone here ever see the video of Mick Jagger and David Bowie doing "Dancing in the Street"? That was HOT!!
I'm with MadameX, too, on Led Zep and Black Crowes. Love The Who, & the Turtles are good.
Anyway, my vote goes to the Beatles. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

Black Crowes, what did they do besides "she talks to angels"? I got sick of that song real fast.
David Bowie pwns. Stupid Yoko Ono holding the rights to Fame so a funky version is on his greatest hits.
The Who are real Pinball Wizards
Led Zep is of course great. So who here played the record backwards to here the evil message in Stairway? _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Deep Purple, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Gary Moore, Wishbone Ash, Rainbow, anything with some decent guitar riffs.
Beatles or Stones are not my kind of music. _________________ Gary R Administrator at Malware Removal University

Well, the original question was "who's your personal fave out of the two and why?"
There were also no opera nor symphonic artists listed but that doesn't mean that no one here appreciates those. |

I agree, it is revealing. And it's nice to have a fun topic for a change, eh?
Ok, here are my others: Talking Heads; U2, Cream, including Eric Clapton and his other groups like Derek and the Dominos; Beach Boys; Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Allman Brothers Band, and I already mentioned Led Zeppelin, the Who and the Black Crowes. Lots of others from that era, too many too list here.
Nick there's a lot of good Black Crowes music you evidently haven't heard. There's a 2 CD set of the Black Crowes and Jimmy Page (of Led Zep) live, that is great! They do some of the Led Zep songs better than Led Zep almost.
Newer stuff -- Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, the Raconteurs, Oasis, the Magic Numbers and I probably left out some.
I also like classical when I'm in the mood, some bluegrass and some folk. I like some of the older country, but not the new country much. Also some of the old blues. I guess that about covers it. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

Regarding the 2 groups named, I'd choose the Beatles I guess. Some of both groups music is OK but don't care for a lot of it.
If we let this thread go off topic some more, we can get to the good music.
Group...................Song
Pink Floyd.............Echoes
Uriah Heep...........Paradise/the Spell
Yes.......................And You and I
Rush.....................2112 Overture
I also enjoy Native American music. If you ever get the chance, check out Sacred Spirit Drums by David and Steve Gordon. Excellent, relaxing listening.

If the "topic" is British rock, then my citation of Pretty Things is only the most recent in a long history, which was key to shaping my outlook on things in general.
It began with the Who, progressed to the Kinks, detoured through Sid Barrett and has at last arrived at Pretty Things. I had never heard of them before, but a mention on NPR prompted me to check them out, and wow, the first two albums really do rock in the same way Chester Burnette and Muddy Waters do/did.
I had a friend who was literally obcessed with the Stones, so I got plenty of exposure, but I also found the "dark" persona to be trite and superficial: Pretty Things came by their reputation more honestly.
On the other hand, I always saw the Beatles as the counterpoint to the Stones "darkness," and as such just as phony, in this limited sense. I love individual songs by both, but frankly, I'm album-oriented, so that perhaps elucidates my comportment toward them.
In terms of albums, though Townsend released the two "operas" (both of which I still love), by far and away the best album ever released IMO is the Who's Sellout, which still makes me smile.
And so we come to my bottom line in music: its gotta rock and make me laugh.
p.s., rock is about breaking the rules and following one's own instructions |

Just go back a few years before the Stones/Beatles
Cliff Richard & the shaddows
Freddie and the Dreamers.
Lonny Donogan ( “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight”)
Or a little later try the Monkeys - although an American Band they were liked in the UK too. _________________

I actually like or have liked most of the music people have mentioned above - even, yes the Stones and the Beatles. ON topic for once IMHO Beatles more innovative, Stones more fun at parties.
OFF topic to quote Herbalist:
| Quote: |
| we can get to the good music. |
Oldies:
Blind Willie Johnson: Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground. (Oooh)
King Solomon Hill: Whoopie Blues. (Aaah)
Robert Johnson: Hellhound on my Trail. (Supposed comment from Jimmy Page on first hearing RJ: "Who is playing the other guitar"?)
Carter Family: Wildwood Flower. (Bleak and beautiful.)
Middling Oldies:
Johnny Cash: Live at Folsom Prison. (What a performance.)
Beatles: White Album. (I admit it - it's great.)
Stones: Beggars Banquet. (Mean and nasty.)
Capt. Beefheart and the Magic Band: Lick My Decals Off, Baby. (Every freakin' minute of this album is deadly.)
Hmm. Those were all late 60's. Must've been something in the air.
Oldish:
Alex Harvey: Next. (Jacques Brel cover.)
The Specials: Too Hot. (Great bass.)
The Stranglers: MenInBlack (Cutely strange album.)
spam Pistols: Never Mind The B******. (Hey it's great Rock'n'Roll.)
Monochrome Set: Song to the Siren. (Cover of the Tim Buckley classic.)
Newish:
Uhhh... Well, Gillian Welch, Bembeya Jazz, lots of other African stuff I have to get off the radio. Never seem to catch up with much 'popular' music any more.
I suppose THAT is quite revealing. _________________ Inperfect. |

I've downloaded some from iTunes, which is handy if you just want one or two songs from an album, but most of mine is CDs. I never downloaded anything from file sharing networks. Besides being illegal, it's too risky because they are loaded with malware. I'd be willing to bet well over half of the people coming here for help with malware removal got infected from file-sharing. But that's another discussion. _________________ Former Microsoft MVP 2005-2009, Consumer Security

At the moment the Leeds Music Festival is on at Bramham Park, its about 5-6 miles away, and I can still hear it above the TV, even with the windows closed.
I love music, especially Rock, but like to listen to it when I want, not because some morons have never heard of a volume control on their amps.
No idea which bands are playing.
Sorry, moan over, its just turned 11pm, and the acts have just finished for the night, peace once more descends. _________________ Gary R Administrator at Malware Removal University

Way too familiar. Quite a few years back, had a younger group living next door. Every night, between 2 and 3AM, I'd get woke up by Edgar Winter, Frankenstein. Right when it would get to that wild synsthesizer part, they'd crank it all the way up. Best response I could think of at the time was to point the speakers out the front door and give them back the very same song at 7AM. If I felt particularly obnoxious, I'd follw it with about 30 minutes of 440 Mopar dumping out of a set of Tri-Y's (music in its own right) and let it shake the ground for a while. Figured if they could keep me up at night, I'll get them up in the morning. They eventually moved.

Other groups.....for me none can top Pink Floyd.
One of their founding members Roger "Syd" Barrett just died last month, when I heard about it I could only think "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" (the song was written for him). |
Didn't hear about that. They're one of my favorite groups as well, and that's one of their better songs, if you can call 3/4 of the album a song. Dark Side of the Moon is still my favorite. To look at how many copies of that album have been sold, a lot of people would agree.

It works, but your aim is terrible. We've been in a pretty bad drought all summer. Yesterday we had some big thunderstorms dump several inches of rain, first big rains we've seen in months. They flooded the fairgrounds (county fair was running this last week) shorting out rides and part of the bandstand.
You got the dance right. Just need to point it more accurately.

I always get mixed up with the third step, can never remember whether its a hop on the left foot followed by a stride forward, or a hop on the right foot followed by a stride backwards. Seems it makes all the difference.
