I've been a huge Beatles fan ever since the first time I heard Paul McCartney sing "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah..." Heart

Then there was the White album, St. Pepper's, etc. All great stuff, IMO.

I like the Stones music, but I'm not a huge to-die-for Stones fan. Did anyone here ever see the video of Mick Jagger and David Bowie doing "Dancing in the Street"? That was HOT!!

I'm with MadameX, too, on Led Zep and Black Crowes. Love The Who, & the Turtles are good.

Anyway, my vote goes to the Beatles. Very Happy

If the "topic" is British rock, then my citation of Pretty Things is only the most recent in a long history, which was key to shaping my outlook on things in general.

It began with the Who, progressed to the Kinks, detoured through Sid Barrett and has at last arrived at Pretty Things. I had never heard of them before, but a mention on NPR prompted me to check them out, and wow, the first two albums really do rock in the same way Chester Burnette and Muddy Waters do/did.

I had a friend who was literally obcessed with the Stones, so I got plenty of exposure, but I also found the "dark" persona to be trite and superficial: Pretty Things came by their reputation more honestly.

On the other hand, I always saw the Beatles as the counterpoint to the Stones "darkness," and as such just as phony, in this limited sense. I love individual songs by both, but frankly, I'm album-oriented, so that perhaps elucidates my comportment toward them.

In terms of albums, though Townsend released the two "operas" (both of which I still love), by far and away the best album ever released IMO is the Who's Sellout, which still makes me smile.

And so we come to my bottom line in music: its gotta rock and make me laugh.

p.s., rock is about breaking the rules and following one's own instructions

I actually like or have liked most of the music people have mentioned above - even, yes the Stones and the Beatles. ON topic for once IMHO Beatles more innovative, Stones more fun at parties. Smile

At the moment the Leeds Music Festival is on at Bramham Park, its about 5-6 miles away, and I can still hear it above the TV, even with the windows closed.

I love music, especially Rock, but like to listen to it when I want, not because some morons have never heard of a volume control on their amps.

No idea which bands are playing.

Sorry, moan over, its just turned 11pm, and the acts have just finished for the night, peace once more descends.

I always get mixed up with the third step, can never remember whether its a hop on the left foot followed by a stride forward, or a hop on the right foot followed by a stride backwards. Seems it makes all the difference.
