Well, I don't know if you would call it an official announcement or not but the SSD home page is linking to it from the 'forums' button; http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
"and no User Help forums either."
Not sure I understand what you mean there, Chachazz. Are you talking about NI or SaferNetworking? |

Trying not to think about the past....I sure hope it is temporary and not total loss of some of the threads that were contained at Net-Integration. Many well spelled out interworkings of the program were provided by some very knowledgeable folks in regards to Spybot |

I have a feeling that it's a start from scratch kind of thing. The new Spybot board looks to be vBulletin software, while N-I uses Invision. If the database for the Spybot forums can be imported, I would think they would have done it before opening the new board. The N-I forum is giving a 404 error, so it does not look promising. _________________ Nick's Security Ticker

Hello.
Personally I do not know if N-I will come up again.
There was no warning it was going down and no information since except for the message we all receive regarding maintainance.
I am sure regular posters who made N-I their home, as did I, have felt bewildered.
The Spybot-S&D forums are new.
Looking forward.

Everyone please keep in mind that when the Ad-Aware forums shut down it was action by Ad-Aware itself
Net Integration is not Spybot itself or PepiMK but is/was the US distributor for the Commercial versions
Good to see a post by Tashi, Corrine and others here

Hi, wyrmrider. I do keep regular tabs on SWW 'cause ya never know what you'll be up to.
Your comments are indeed spot on, wyrmrider. The similarity, however, is that when Lavasoft closed their support forums, the historical content was lost to the users. 'Tis the same situation with N-I. There is/was a lot of helpful information posted there. _________________

PepiMK and other team members have found the time to answer several other posts on the new Spybot forum since I posted my question. As they have studiously avoided replying to that, I can only conclude that any explanation would be embarrassing to one party or another.
Real shame, IMHO. |

JRosenfeld, consider what wyrmrider posted. N-I did not belong to PepiMK or Safer Networking. Whatever agreement there may have been between Safer Networking & N-I was just that -- between them. I think we all need to be grateful that PepiMK is willing to provide a site for users to get help with the software. _________________

It's pretty obvious that we are all curious.
I've seen three boards related to LS support disappear and possibly now one related to SSD. All were frequented by the entire pri/sec community at large. The wealth of knowledge lost is staggering. The work of many very smart and selfless individuals has been lost forever. As someone mentioned in a similar thread elsewhere, history tends to repeat itself.
Whether the NI database is lost forever is still unknown and only time will tell us if it will yet be made available for reference. However, I can't imagine any feasible reason to maintain two support boards.

Agree there is historical loss, as users cannot read past threads and topics and reap knowledge that existed at NI; however, the experts and knowlegeable members will quickly gravitate to the other security & help boards/forums to provide knowledge and assistance to users.

I guess that it remains to be seen what is available in the way of backups. Hopefully there will be something that is recoverable.
That brings up a point that I have often thought about. A lot of us have smaller hobby type sites with far more disk space than we need or can use. I would certainly be happy to host an SQL backup of a site or two, not browsable from my domain, but as a repository only. |

Other than the loss of N-I, if that is the case, perhaps it was time to "move on". Granted the threads may or will be lost from N-I, frankly, I'm happy to see the new Board.

| Due to software problems (you may remember that the Net-Integration forum was using Invision PowerBoard, which we wrote about a few weeks ago), health problems of our U.S. administrator and reorganization of support staff, we've set up new support forums on our Safer Networking servers. The hopefully last setup has been made today, and we encourage you to use it as much as you did on the Net-Integration site. |
While he didn't really answer any questions, the new forum seems to be a bit more permanent. |

Looks pretty official to me. Besides, I think it makes sense that the support forum be owned by Safer Networking. _________________

I lost 6,000 of my posts even before the board went down; or at least the post count and pages reflected that.
Ditto siljaline and Corrine's comments. |

I'll just quote myself here from where I commented over @ SI;
"I feel particularly sorry for those hosted by NI who didn't maintain backups. It is always a good policy to keep backups current.
You know, I'll be willing to bet that I've known Ahmad longer and better than anyone in the pri/sec community. I am VERY glad to see PMK create his own forum. I'm not going to detail, but most who have been in this industry for long know why I feel that way and that my experiences with the man have been less than rewarding.
Anyway, I'm certain that all concerned are better off without the connection to him. JMO " |

I just became a new member here and also at the new Spybot Forums. It's still a mystery as to why the NI forums were shutdown so suddenly. I doubt strongly it was accidental. Looks like someone may have "lowered the boom," if you get my meaning?
I have many lost posts but I will write more. In the meantime we can all jump in and help give the new Spybot Forums a much needed lift. |

Hi, Prince Serendip! Good to see you here.
As to a boom being lowered, that does not appear to be the case. Rather, it appears to be more like another instance of history repeating itself. I'm well acquainted with the topic of lost posts, having well over 12K when LS shut down. What is worse in this case is all the data that others being hosted by Eagle1 lost.
On a positive note, the new site looks great and fits well under the Safer Networking umbrella. _________________
